The O’Neill Institute at Georgetown University Welcomes
Health Informatics, Public Health Expert to Its Leadership Team
Collmann to Lead Innovative Research Efforts to Advance
National, Global Health Law
Washington, D.C.—The Linda and Timothy O’Neill Institute
for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University today
announced that Jeffrey Collmann, Ph.D., an anthropologist
with public health and informatics expertise, joined its leadership
team effective Feb. 19, 2008. He was the unanimous selection
of a national search committee.
The O’Neill Institute—a joint effort between Georgetown
University Law Center and Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health
Studies (NHS), a part of Georgetown University Medical Center—advances
innovative scholarship related to pressing global health concerns.
Collmann has accepted the position of director of the Center for
Disease Prevention and Health Outcomes. He will also be an
associate professor of international health at the School of Nursing & Health
Studies, which houses a research portfolio of nearly $30 million.
“Jeff brings to the O’Neill Institute a track record
of research and discovery that benefits the public’s health,” said
NHS Dean Bette Keltner. “He will lead the charge
to identify new partnerships and projects on disease prevention and
health outcomes around the nation and the world.”
“We look forward to having Jeff’s breadth of experience,
range of scholarly inquiry, and depth of expertise in helping realize
our ambitions for the O’Neill Institute,” said Lawrence
O. Gostin, faculty director of the O’Neill Institute and
the Linda and Timothy O’Neill Professor of Global Health Law.
Before the position at the O’Neill Institute, Collmann served
as research associate professor and division director of Georgetown
University Medical Center’s Imaging Science and Information
Systems (ISIS) Center. ISIS is a medical research and development
organization that specializes in information and imaging technology
for personal health care, public health care, and national biosecurity.
While at ISIS, Collmann engaged several cutting-edge areas in medicine
and health care, including telemedicine, e-health, information
assurance, and disease surveillance.
Collmann also has held faculty appointments in clinical bioethics,
radiology, sociology, and microbiology and immunology at Georgetown. An
accomplished and well-funded researcher, he has authored, co-authored,
or edited multiple books, chapters, articles, and presentations reflecting
his interdisciplinary interests, including a recent piece in the Journal
of the American Medical Informatics Association.
In his new role, Collmann will apply his knowledge of informatics,
science, and technology to advance critical and collaborative efforts
to address disease prevention and health outcomes. He will
lead the development of research and academic activities and identify
strong and interdisciplinary projects between NHS and Georgetown
Law, as well
Georgetown University Medical Center, Georgetown Public Policy Institute,
and other campus partners. He will also work to create external
relationships with organizations such as the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and other
national and international organizations and industries.
“I welcome Jeff as an integral and vital part of our O’Neill
Institute management team and know his skills and knowledge will
contribute powerfully to our agenda of using the law as a tool for
improving health,” said John Monahan, executive director
of the O’Neill Institute.
“The O’Neill Institute creates an opportunity for scholars
of many disciplines, colleges, and organizations to join together
in search of solutions for major global health problems,” said Collmann. “I
am honored to become part of an endeavor so emblematic of Georgetown’s
Jesuit heritage.”
